The Generation Study, led by Genomics England in partnership with the NHS, aims to sequence the genomes of 100,000 new-borns to explore enhancements in the early diagnosis and treatment of genetic conditions.

The Generation Study is a ground breaking research study that will sequence the genomes of 100,000 new-born babies. It is being run by Genomics England in partnership with the NHS to understand whether the early diagnosis and treatment of genetic conditions can be improved.

To achieve this feat, Genomics England required special medical test kits preparing for use by staff on maternity wards within a short timeframe and turned to medical contract packing specialists The Finishing Line, as Category Lead for NHS Supply Chain Martin Hall explains.

“Having reviewed approved suppliers on the Crown Commercial Service Framework, we chose The Finishing Line as partners for this important project, not only because they provided the best value for money quote, but also because we had a high degree of confidence that the team understood and could fulfil our requirements.”

Within a month of first discussions, The Finishing Line received the kit components, which they then assembled, printed and inserted Clinician Information Leaflets, before labelling and dispatching 30,000 kits on pallets to the NHS Supply Chain national distribution centre in Rugby for final distribution into the NHS trusts selected for trials.

The team also helped source other elements for Genomics England, such as branded tape and identification cards.

Before work commenced, Martin Hall visited The Finishing Line’s new facility in Basildon to meet the team and see how previous NHS projects had been managed, specifically assembly of COVID sampling kits, in which the Finishing Line were instrumental in fulfilling medical testing kits for the Government’s COVID REACT study.

“I was impressed both by the facility and the attitude of the people. The Finishing Line fully understood the nature of the project and gave us the confidence that they would deliver to our requirements”

“I was impressed both by the facility and the attitude of the people, I was met by Director Andy Mead and shown around by Warehouse Manager Chris Spooner, from the workforce assembly line to the top management team, The Finishing Line fully understood the nature of the project and gave me the confidence that they would deliver to our requirements.”

“We weren’t disappointed – The Finishing Line did a great job. The Generation Study will be sampling 100,000 infants per annum and if the study is successful will create an ongoing requirement for testing kits. We will be monitoring stock levels and will be partnering with The Finishing Line as we move forward.”
